I clipped a small bunch of basil on my way in the house one weeknight and forgot what I was going to use it for so I stuffed it into some water to see if it would survive until I could use it. That was about 2 weeks ago! Now, I noticed it's thriving quite nicely. Click on the image for a bigger view. It's pretty awesome. I'm conisidering getting a perforated clear plastic piece to place over a pool of water to set up a mini hydroponic garden to see if I can use my basil for a chunk of the winter. It's my favorite herb and I LOVE to cook with it all the time. Keep you posted.
Plants, ain't they cool?
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of water did you use? Tap er filtered?

hmm, i've had some in a plastic cup on my dining table a few weeks now, and nothing fun like that happened -- the water just turned brown. I am trying to find time to chowder it up with some olive oil so i can freeze it for winter pesto later...
ReplyDeleteHey Foodnerd, been a long time. Parenting has taken me out of circulation.
ReplyDeleteRe: Basil. I clipped the ends immediately before I put them in water and the ends were just barely set in the water and it went a total of about a month and then began to harbor some mold. Pretty cool experiment though. I clipped my basil this year like a maniac and it just went nuts! I now have basil shrubs in my yard. I figured I would've run out in a week at the rate I was using it and it behaved the opposite. Started growing like crazy. It was very cool.
